A major manufacturer of agricultural machinery replaced bronze bearings with iglide J plastic bushings from Igus to eliminate corrosion and increase life span on its potato planter.
A planter pick arm was encountering early failures due to several problems when using oil-impregnated bronze bushings. The failures were occuring in two regional locations; on the west coast the bronze bearings were experiencing high wear and premature failure due to the very abrasive conditions caused by high levels of volcanic ash in the soil, and on the East coast high salt content in the air caused corrosion and seizure.
By switching to the Igus iglide J plastic bushings, the company was able to avoid replacing the bronze bushings two to three times a season. The planter also had a longer service life, increased reliability, enhanced technical performance, and reduced maintenance cost.
